Minority issue in post-Communist Europe

Partager sur :

Abstract

The fall of the Soviet Union has had mixed consequences on the issue of minorities : on the one hand, it has allowed the resolution of this thorny issue by democratic (although not always) means, yet it did endanger the apparent stability of certain countries, which had not dealt with this question until now. All Eastern and Central European countries, except Bulgaria, acknowledge their own national minorities, yet their treatment of them varies. Thus, while this question remains explosive in Serbia, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary have more or less settled it. One constant feature can nonetheless be observed: Rom and Hungarian minorities experience the more difficulties of integration in their countries of residence.
