Not much ado about something. 2009 European elections in France

European elections on June 7th in France have confirmed that this type of public consultation is not being easily integrated within the French public space, as illustrated by the lack of interest in the campaign and the record level of abstention. This civic apathy, combined with a regionalized voting system, offers a means to decipher two characteristic paradoxes of the 2009 European elections. One the one hand, the campaign’s tone was rather Eurosceptic, whereas elected officials tend to approve treaties. On the other hand, those elections were rather hostile against government parties, but the French faction tends to align very progressively with national delegations in terms of reelection rates as well as partisan concentration.
