Abstract
This study draws up an assessment of the foreign action taken by Jacques Chirac since his election at the presidency of the French Republic. It clarifies its elements of continuity with the path created by General de Gaulle and underlines the evolutions induced by the end of the Cold War. Thus, it should be noted that, if Jacques Chirac reaffirmed the sacrosanct principle of « national independence », he also had to draw the conclusions from the advent of a unipolar world by maintaining the influence of France through the respect of international law and the UN.
