AFRI 2008, volume IX - The US in Afghanistan

 Abstract

The oncoming US elections raise, among others, the problem of the new elected President’s policy choice for Afghanistan. It will depend upon the prospects of the future Administration for Iraq. US interests, as well as those of the NATO members, lie in the connection between the struggle against terrorism and the stabilization of the Afghan government. Other countries, including some NATO members, could have different objectives, meaning only governance and stabilization. The next President, whether Democrat or Republican, will have a threefold option : to follow the same pattern, with a few modifications ; to increase military commitment ; to withdraw the armed forces. The most likely scenario is that the US and their allies will try to maximize profits and minimize costs.
