The Union for the Mediterranean : a tentative shot of Sarkozy’s diplomacy ?

Launching the Union for the Mediterranean – a French project in regional cooperation that aims at being innovative – has provoked much diplomatic agitation and comments in 2008. The adjustment process leading to reintegrating this project within European policies does illustrate the first steps of Sarkozy’s diplomacy: beyond the dynamic and adventurous style, this exercise allows to enhance France’s traditional assets in the Mediterranean while striving to maintain the European leadership in foreign policy matters.
