Forty years after, IPS

International Press Service (IPS) was set up in Rome in 1964 by a group of journalists from Europe and Latin America headed by the Italian-Argentine journalist Roberto Savio. Founded with the goal of providing a different view of Latin America and Europe, IPS has become a Third World and development news agency. From its very beginning, forty years ago, IPS was «different» : it had been created as a nonprofit entity – it was the only international journalist cooperative and has become today an international association -, dedicated to development, global issues and civil society. Though complementary, IPS stands out from other big international news agencies because it doesn’t stick to the «agenda setter» as these agencies. IPS explains «how» and «why» events occur. Nowadays, IPS exists in 120 countries and has become the fifth international information network. – Summary AFRI-2005
