The Baltic countries and the enlargement of the European Union

Scheduled for 2004, the EU enlargement to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania represents the ultimate outcome of the strong Baltic governments’ commitment towards irremediably anchoring these former Soviet territories to the European democratic space. The enlargement also questions the relationship between Europe and Russia, through the presence of important Russian-speaking minorities in the Baltic region and the moving eastward of the EU borders, which are becoming a Euro-Russian border. –Summary AFRI-2003
