– Abstract
Ever since the end of World War Two and all along the Cold War, American leaders have traditionally pronounced themselves in favor of the European building process. Under the presidency of George W. Bush, in the wake of the attacks on 9/11 in 2001 and the invasion of Iraq, which have shaken transatlantic relations, « neo-conservative » milieus in Washington have begun to question the faithfulness and viability of the European Union as an ally. This being said, it progressively became obvious to United States leaders that their own unilateralist inclinations were harmful to America itself: the building of a strong and consistent Europe is fundamentally vital to the United States, who need it to face new global challenges.
