Media of Slovakia from 1993 to our days

Abstract

Markets’ opening and the expectations of the Slovak citizens after the independence of this Central European country modified deeply the media landscape. Many private media tried an establishment and several foreign investors, German, Switzerland or American, developed profitable activities, in particular in the weekly press and commercial television. The level of concentration of the media is thus relatively high, but, since 2003, at the same time, the radio and television public service keeps a relation of relative independence with the government, and the private media are not related any more to the parties in power. The Slovak media market is perhaps not mature yet and fascination for the Anglo-Saxon theses is still important, but the evolution of practices, within a European framework from now on, must undoubtedly come from the users themselves.
